Proceedings - THE PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOSAFETY WORKSHOP
Conclusions

In order to tap into the potential that biotechnology offers to agricultural productivity and food security, there is a need for greater dedication by African governments towards biotechnology development. This can be done by developing their capacity to negotiate access to intellectual property (IP) rights and biosafety policies and guidelines that foster technological innovations, delivery and trade.

It was agreed unanimously by participants that other initiatives like this workshop should be promoted again. This workshop could be seen as a start for future discussions between the participants and countries to share previous experiences, factors and indicators that were useful for a proper construction and/or conduction of a regulatory framework, and related scientific studies regarding GMOs and their behavior and impacts.
