Proceedings - THE PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOSAFETY WORKSHOP
Presentation

This report provides the proceedings of the "The Plant Biotechnology and Biosafety Workshop" which was co-organized by the USA Embassy and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - Embrapa, in Brasília on 8-12 April, 2013.

Representatives from seven African countries that are in the development of its laws on production and consumption of GM food process had been in Brazil to meet the local experience on the subject. Researchers, producers and authorities of Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria and Uganda, listened to the lectures at Embrapa throughout the week. Africans also heard experiences of the Department of Agriculture of the United States and from the Center for Environmental Risk Assessment (CERA).

The key objectives of the workshop were:

to recognize global and regional scenarios for Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) - biosafety and other issues;
to foster knowledge sharing between regions/countries and professionals and practitioners.

The workshop has been designed to meet these objectives while ensuring maximum interaction among participants with diverse backgrounds.

The workshop covered topics such as legal framework, important research and development topics for GM crops, market and other non-legal important issues like: best management practices, coexistence, low level presence; and some other initiatives related to south-south cooperation and communication based on science. On the last day the group was driven to the town of Rio Verde, State of Goiás, where they visited areas of production of transgenic crops (mainly corn).Their experience during the visit to Rio Verde is not part of this report.
